Portrait of Oscar Selmer, husband of the
local veterinarian. Referring to the winds gripping his beard, he
explained that when white settlers had first arrived in Skagway, they
thought it to be the perfect port and disbelieved the natives' advice
to choose another spot. Although Skagway has remained in this
location, it has always been plagued by terrible winds. Oscar
passed away Feb., 2001.
