The photograph David took of me with my masked friend was the last time he ever photographed me. David Barker-Maltby, Nov. 12, 1962 - May 17, 2001, died of bacterial meningitis in Toronto on May 17th. We have known each other as friends and as fellow photographers since the early 80s. On the afternoon of April 21st, when David realized that I was having trouble making the stairs and breathing due to some heavy medication I was on, he waited for me and then watched my back while we photographed the teargassing and stand-off between protesters and police together (the photos on this page). In the video, he is the photographer in green. I finally lost him up there and so never got a chance to say good-bye, or thank him properly. David was a loyal friend and a wonderful photographer. Looking back on the Parade route. Those of us who turned left are trickling in. I was glad to hear later that some of the speakers from the People's Summit-- Maude Barlow's Council of Canadians and José Bové among them-- also chose this direction.
