The Mahoneys
Dawson City, Yukon

©Linda Dawn Hammond 1981

The Mahoneys hailed originally from Alaska, where they had spent several years travelling in a caravan with their (I believe) nine children. When they felt that Alaska no longer reflected the wildness and freedom they sought, they moved to the Yukon to start one of the only working ranches in the territory. Along with their children and numerous grandchildren, they raise horses and grow grain just outside of town. The father can be found on occasion in Dawson City, giving rides to tourists in his horse-drawn buggy.

I had the honour of being invited to spend the day with them on the ranch, as they tended to the horses and performed their daily chores. This included the preparation of dinner for the large extended family, their farmhand and guest. Many loaves of bread were baked in a wood-burning oven, a huge soup placed in the center of the long wooden table, and as everyone joined hands to give praise to God for the food being given to them, all of the children suddenly piped up in one voice, "...and God bless the cook!"... At which the mother blushed and lowered her eyes, a happy and contented smile on her lips.
